Well....I "did" do it on a "below-knee/leg" front...but that's a BIG difference from a hand! I do at least think that it sounds like there's some real progress being made on arm/hand prosthetics, and part of me says that, if my actual hand was completely paralyzed with no hope of a surgical improvement, AND if there was a real chance of being fitted with a cutting-edge prosthetic hand, I MIGHT consider doing it. But that's mainly because, having two functioning hands, I can't imagine how I'd cope with only one. I've seen a goodly number of arm amps in recent years, and the ones I've spoken with have complained mightily about the state of current upper-extremity prosthetics...and they generally seem to function awfully well one-armed! (I know that I was terrified of the idea of losing a leg, until the day came when I actually had to lose one...I now consider it a minor inconvenience, having learned just how easy it is to get about one-legged or in a prosthesis.)
So...if one of the arm-amp folks here could offer a perspective on what it might take for them to consider an elective amputation in order to take advantage of a high-tech prosthetic hand, that could make for an interesting discussion! How about it, folks?

It does seem that progress is being made on arm/hand prosthetics, and think I would be thinking along the same lines as you Cheryl if my hand was completely paralyzed with no ability to function or of improvement ... and perhaps I had the reality of getting one of these cutting edge prosthetics .... but imagine for most people that prosthetic reality is somewhere still a long way off in the future.

I can see the good points, but what about the costs. Who would pay for this and the upkeep of it?
