Hello
Been some time since my second above knee amputation. My first was immediately after war trauma and I was largely unaware. This time I felt it became more like a Barnum and Bailey circus! I once saw a programme called 'the last 24 hours' about some man due to be executed. I honestly can say the whole pantomime reminded me of that!
I do not like being centre of attention and this time was really as 'centre as you can get'. Nevertheless, I finally woke up and found it had been done! My stump felt as if a ten story building was resting on it though no pain and quickly I was got to sit up. I wanted to do this myself and grabbed the chain and handle above my bed. I shot up like a rocket out of Baikonur!
I am very high double and the first period of time was about getting used to a complete balance change. This could be rather funny, looking back. Quickly I found how much easier it was to transfer, etc rather than with a very painful and useless leg but I crashed a few times.
I was allowed out after the stiches had gone and insisted on driving home myself. I have an MPU with electric rear gate and ramp and electric wheelchair. Drive in, it locks itself. As before, I then transfer to driving seat as the backrest of seat is always left right down (this is electric too). The trasfer is very much easier too now. I already used hand contols BTW.
So, I survived and am doing quite well for most part and would be happy to describe more if anyone interested. Many things are far easier than I had thought but other problems, unforeseen have of course come.
best
