Romeo:
I know it's easy for me to talk, as a single bka, but it WILL get better. Your wheelchair, like your crutches, will be packed away in the garage, 'just in case'. I still have my crutches, but I gave my wheelchair back to the hospital (who give them to all amputees) after a couple of years, as it hadn't been used.
It'll be a great day when you look down and see two shoes at the end of your new legs, rather than two wheels. I hope it comes soon.

I am progressing pretty well, in my opinion atleast. I have been working with my prosthetics for about a month and a half now, and am using a walker, soon to move to forearm crutches. I will always have a chair, as a backup. The hospitals here do not give wheelchairs out, they have to be purchased.
I am looking forward to the day that I am able to walk unassisted, and get back to a normal life. I am long looking forward to riding the fire truck again, that will be an awesome day.

Hi Romeo, I'm a single AK of about 25 years, I don't possess a chair or crutches and my family, friends and colleagues don't consider me disabled... simple as that! Hello oneblue, romeo.
Yes, I remember those frustrating first months between operation and independent walking. Nearly drove me mad - I used to mark each day on the calendar for the first 6 weeks, as they had told me that 'in six weeks you will have your first leg'.
We do have all sorts of problems with our state-run health system, but paying for bits isn't usually down to us. I'm glad you were on duty when you got hit - facing what you are without insurance, now that really WOULD drive you crazy.
Good luck, and we want pictures of you riding the fire truck (do you get to ring the bell?)
Allen, bka, London.

I was not on duty with the fire department, I am a volunteer, I was at my paying job at the time...Workman's comp has it's drawbacks as well, but we aint payin nothin... I will definitely have pictures and possibly some video, I have crawled up into the truck since the accident, with no prosthetics. I will try to find that picture to post on here, it is on my facebook, for those who may have seen my page. www.facebook.com/texasff feel free to add me if you would like, pictures are in the "06-01-09" folder I believe
