I have been an arm amputee for 8 years and I have had multiple dreams of me with my arm, but I have never had a dream as an amputee. Has anyone else experienced this? It would seem that my psyche would have gotten used to the idea that I am an amputee.

Hey, Dave, and welcome to the forum. I've been an amputee for over 40 years now (so my memory's fading a bit), but it seems I must have started being an amputee in my dreams fairly soon after becoming one in the physical. The reason I think this is because when I was in my early twenties (amputee @ age 15) I had a dream in which I had both arms, and in the dream I was aware that I was an arm amputee so having two arms was something special--I just remember being elated and clapping and clapping my hands. I still remember the dream because it was so unusual. Doing the math, I'm guessing that I had been dreaming as an amputee for a number of years as it was so exciting in the dream to have two arms again!

Thanks for your reply. It isn't something that is significant, but it is something that I am curious about.

I am a leg amputee but like Helen I have been an amputee a long time, mostly I dream that I am not, sometimes I am running, or not really aware of the restrictions I have in everyday life. Mainly the times when I dream I am an amputee is when I am having problems with my walking or my prosthetics etc., sometimes I will dream this before I am physically aware of it.

Interesting topic. I am usually not an amputee when I dream, but there are those weird dreams where I am aware of my amputation. I do have a weird recurring dream where I am faced with another limb's amputation and I do feel like it would be hard to have to go through it again.

I have also had the "hospital" dream, but in those dreams I am not an amputee yet. That is weirdd, because I never knew I was going to have my arm amputated since I was unconscious between the accident and waking up in the hospital.

Oh, this is interesting! My own dreams seem to be "evenly divided," based on how old I think I am in the dream. If the dream seems to be set somewhere in my two-legged past, the odds are real good that I will indeed have both legs...if the dream is set in my post-amputation life, the odds will be equally good that I'll be a uniped. However....I can recall a few dreams where I was a one-legged child and a few where the dream setting is something where I should be an amp but I have two legs.
The weirdest of these dreams was sometime in the first year or two after I lost the leg. In that one, I was back at work after my surgery. It was a terribly busy day in the office and, all of a sudden, I just got up and started running around frantically "doing stuff"...but I didn't have a prosthesis. I was just kind of gliding along on my one remaining leg, feeling oddly graceful. Then someone said something like "How are you DOING that?" and I replied, "I don't know, but it's working, so let's just go with it!"
It was so bizarre that I've never forgotten it................

Hi Dave. Been here just a week or more. I'm a fifty year amputee. The only dream I had was my one and only arm cracked into little pieces and fell apart. Scary drewm. Only one I ever had.

Welcome to the forum....I just had my 1 year "anniversary" on 6/10. In each dream I have had I have not been an amputee but I also never run in a dream...interesting.
