Hi, my 71yr old father has just had a lower leg amputation due to vascular disease. He was OK for the first couple of days. However he has been in severe pain (stump). Is this normal and how long does it take for the extreme pain to get better? Thanks

Hi, Ian, sorry to hear about your dad. I recommend you accompany him to a follow-up appointment with his surgeon ASAP. Experiencing severe stump pain a few days after surgery doesn't sound normal to me, especially if it can't be controlled with the pain prescription he was given when released from the hospital. Call his doc right away and don't take no for an answer!
Helen
BTW--My surgery was so long ago I don't remember how long it took for the the surgical pain to subside, but it was definitely more than just a few days. I do remember using a pain prescription for weeks following, but by then I was experiencing more phantom pain* than physical pain.
*phantom pain isn't usually helped by meds prescribed for pain
