Hello - Thought I would share only b/c it may help someone else, although I am not sure how much I could've prevented it.
I am 50 y.o. male and had two surgeries at end of April. The first was below the knee but the second a few days later was above. They were necessary to save my life from being poisoned by Sepsis, Staph, and MRSA. I had no idea that was the issue until weeks later b/c I never asked and no one told me.
One night I twisted my ankle on a simple matt on the floor. I had sneakers on so no cut etc. (it will make sense why I mention that later). I went to bed but broke out in a sweat and had the chills. Having played many sports and martial arts when I was younger, I was used to my ankles being a problem. That first night was hell, the chills and my ankle throbbing like nothing before. As the days passed and I stayed in bed, it didn't get better. After 2 weeks, yes 2 weeks, of drinking Gatorade/water A LOT and peeing in bottles, I finally called for an ambulance. During that time I was able to make to the bathroom a few times w/a walker and boot....but only a few.
I had no fluid from my ankle and never cut it etc. When EMTs etc. arrived and helped me stand (was almost impossible and extremely painful), blood started gushing (to put it mildly) from the bottom of my foot. They freaked out. None of us were expecting it and they weren't prepared to handle. They finally wrapped it and in ambulance by sugar was in the 400s (I am not diabetic). I told him it was b/c all I've done was drink Gatorade. I found out later that wasn't the cause.
In the trauma unit I had IVs in both arms w/antibiotics pumping in while they took x-rays...most painful event of my life and it took forever. Surgeons came in and said "I'm gonna try to drain fluid but if not enough we may have to take part of your leg". I said "ok". He was shocked that's all I said but I was in shock I think and didn't care. Within 3 hours I was in surgery. No one knows what caused the infections.
Stayed in hospital for 10 days then to rehab for a month. Got prosthetic (c-leg) 2 weeks ago and just starting to learn how to use it. Very hard and frustrating. It has been 5 mos since I really walked and b/c of the surgery I have lost so much muscle mass and put back the weight I had lost in hospital and rehab so it will be journey!!
Perhaps had I gone to the hospital days after it happened I would've been ok but I was hours from dying so there is a good and bad to it.
