Here is something, being fairly new at this, that I do not understand: why is it that the above the knee prosthesis have a nicely shaped portion below the knee, while us below the knee amputees have to make do with the metal pylon showing. There are cosmetic add-ons such as the Allele Design group and numerous others, but they are just strap-on additions, as if we didn't have enough to deal with. Does anyone have any ideas or a prosthetic company that would do this. I don't really care that much about hiding my prosthesis, quite the contrary, in Summer I wear shorts and the rest of the year I wear kilts; much easier than having to drag pant legs a rigid metal and carbon fiber contraption!

The organization that I get my rigs from used to make a foam covering that fits over the pylon and was shaped like a normal calf and ankle. I think there was a skin-coloured sleeve that went over the foam. I never had one done, as I'm not concerned with it, but I would imagine if I was expected to wear shorts as part of a uniform, there may be an expectation to not draw attention to a prosthetic.
It's been years since I saw a 'finished' leg as I'm describing though...

Thanks, Trevor! As I said, I'm not overly concerned whether I draw attention or not, no matter how much one "disguises" the fact one is an amputee, it will always be obvious to anyone who looks. I was just wondering why the really nice AKA prostheses have a built-in cover over the pylon, whereas the BKA's do not. I have to admit some people are reticent to show their prosthesis. For the most part. most are curious and very nice about their comments, a few, well, lets just say that group ranges from the incredibly stupid remarks to the nastiest. Fortunately, these are a small minority. Ruy

There are a few clamps here and there, but that’s the basic leg. There isn’t a nice cover anywhere on it. Maybe you’re thinking that the knee is a cover? Most knees look nice and sleek, but also function as a knee. Maybe post a picture of what you’re seeing and we can go from there?
