I am new, but my dad (FIL) just became a double BKA. He is 82 and does not have a lot of upper body strength (*cough*..none), and he will not be able to use even one prosthetic (diabetic, and he keeps getting ulcers when he uses them which lead to discussion of further amputations on that leg). His first amputation was 2-2019, and he has had nothing but problems with trying to use a prosthetic for that leg, now he lost his other leg. We and he of course want him to have as much independence as possible.
We were trying to move him onto our property, in a mobile home, prior to the last amputation, but I am not sure he can live on his own now. I know he could probably use a lift to get into and out of bed, but I am not sure about using the restroom. He cannot use triangles to lift himself any or even hold himself up for a short period. Add to this his restroom needs are fast and furious as he also has no colon. He is married, but his wife will not be able to help at all. She is 85 lbs and has dementia. I am looking into care givers (live in or daytime-but not sure they would agree to that), but I am still very new to all this.
Is there any device that to help a person, with very little upper body strength, transfer safely from a wheelchair to a potty (or potty chair) and back to the wheelchair? He struggled with transfers and fell frequently when he still had one leg. I am afraid for him to try to get into a sling style lift for the restroom as I think he will fall, but I am open to any suggestions.
Sorry to barge in needy, but this was unexpected and now time is short. My nephew is literally carrying him around for transfers, and I am afraid he will get hurt too.
Side question: he was released from hospital to home less than 24 hours after the amputation....is that normal now? He also has a bleeding issue due to blood thinners. The first BKA he was in the hospital for 5 days and rehab for almost 3 weeks....this time about 22 hours in hospital and home. I presume this is a COVID issue.
