Hello everyone! Glad I found you on Facebook!
I am a new amputee, right BKA as of Nov 09.
I am 45 years young and mother to two awesome boys ages 15 and 17.
Back in Nov of 06 I was bucked off a horse and broke my Tibia/Fibula in about 15 pieces. Landed standing on my feet and it just crushed the bones. I had many surgeries trying to repair the damage (14 total) but infection had set in and they were never able to get it to heal. After 3 long years I gave up and had them take it off before the infection killed me. Now I wished I had not waited so long but I guess you have to get to that place of acceptance first.
It was really hard in the beginning. I had major phantom pains for weeks and I would not sleep for days on end no matter what they gave me but that subsided as the surgical trauma subsided. Now I only have them every once in a while and it's ususally when I am really sore from PT or the socket. I mostly just have the phantom sensations.
I was fitted for my prosthetic in Dec but my stump had not completely healed so I spent weeks of my stitches working their way out before I would wear it without the fear of getting infected again. I have just upgraded to a new socket from so much shrinkage and I am doing great in PT. I am able to do every thing he has thrown at me and I am back to working in my barn, cleaning stalls, climbing ladders and starting next week will be getting back on my horses. I am a little nervous but have spent weeks getting my socket and saddle adjusted so they will do well together. The rest is for me to just suck up and get on.
I have spoken with several other amputees and I always seem to get great advice and insiration. Looking forward to meeting more of you guys and being able to learn from your past experiences.
