Hi. jmoore! TMR (Targeted Muscle Re implantation) also TNR (Targeted Nerve Re implantation) is now standard of care part of the amputation procedure in Europe, Canada and Australia. Unfortunately, here in the USA, surgeons for the most part are still doing amputations as taught more than 160 years ago, with little regard for the consequences for the patient afterwards. There are a few surgeons here in the US doing the procedure,Boston, MA is one of them and a group of surgeons at the University of Michigan are now doing a similar procedure for amputations called RPNI (Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface), where they take the severed nerves and attach small strands of them to muscles thereby providing these nerve fibers to regenerate. Apparently, the success rate is extremely high. I'm sure that if you research some more you will find other centers where either one of these is being done. I had an amputation almost 2 years ago, the first surgeon, well, let's just say he used Civil War technology, I had incredibly debilitating phantom limb pain, I had a revision where a more progressive surgeon did TNR, I have no phantom limb pain any more, however, because this was a revision so I'm still trying out new sockets, etc. Be assertive and be your own advocate, do not take no for an answer and get the help you need.
