Hi, everyone! My name is Ruy. I'm a retired doctor living in Maine. My life changed in the blink of an eye. Almost 2 years ago I had a shooting accident which lead to an emergency amputation of my right leg below the knee. I will not go into details about the surgical procedure, suffice it to say that it was poorly done leading to numerous post operative complications which made the fitting of a prosthesis difficult to achieve. It was almost a year before I realized that I needed to find a new prosthetist. I was lucky to be put in touch with a fantastic prosthetist who fitted me with a better prosthesis and I was able to walk again. However, due to the nature of how my residual limb had been carelessly fashioned, it became clear to both of us that something needed to be done. I had the good fortune to know an excellent plastic surgeon and together with my physiatrist and the prosthetist, my residual limb was reconstructed. As I write this, I'm waiting for my first prosthetic fitting next week. According to the surgeon, prosthetist and physiatrist the new residuum looks "perfect". I certainly hope this work, it has been a long and difficult period, but I do have two amputees who have been incredibly helpful and supportive. Without their help, I would be truly lost since people with 2 meat legs cannot possibly understand what us with limb loss endure on a daily basis. Its not that they are callous or uncaring, its just that one has to be in this "shoe" to understand the obstacles of everyday life of a person with limb loss. Am I the only amputee who feels this way?
