I lost my right arm 2” below the elbow in an industrial accident in 1973. I think I did well adapting and now consider it as an inconvenienceand not major thing. I work as an industrial electric troubleshooter. For a few years now my left shoulder has giving me some problems so after A trip to Dr. and MRI I find I have a torn rotator cuff that will need surgery to repair which will put my left arm unusable for weeks. What I am looking for is someone that may have had a similar situation that could gave me some hints and/or advice to help get over this bump in the road. Thanks Digger

Digger:
There are several people on here with arms etc missing, so hopefully soon one will come along with some ideas. As usual, the majority here have missing legs, so all we can do is sympathise! Mind you, in some ways I'd rather have lost a leg than an arm, or bits of it. Must make life very difficult.

I find I have a torn rotator cuff that will need surgery to repair which will put my left arm unusable for weeks. The head of orthopedics at a local pediatric facility once called the rotator cuff the "gray hair" of orthopedics. I'm only familiar with one case similar to yours and in that one the orthopedic guy wouldn't operate. A pending move to the Cleveland Clinic may have been a contributing factor in the decision, however. I assume you've already been down the PT (physical therapy) road?

It sounds like it's going to be challenging - Trying to manage with basically no arms even for a short period has got to be difficult. I would think you'd need someone to help (but I'm a BKA, so maybe there are tricks etc, I can't conceive of). Good luck with the operation!! Barclay

Shoulder problems,yes--pointers, not so much . The last time I attended the One Arm Dove Hunt (2006) it seemed like everyone there was complaining of shoulder problems, including me. Perhaps it goes with the territory. The best advice I can offer is to post your question on the Arm-Amp List on www.arm-amp.com. The questions go out by email to list members, and generally get a good response. Good luck! Helen BTW--that's me in the pink shirt in the photos from the 2006 OADH

Thanks to all that gave thought to my situation and especially those that posted. I have a lot of support from a loving family and freinds that will help get through this.
