I need some input. I have been talking to another family who's little girl (6 yrs) is facing amputation very shortly. It was a tramatic injury to her ankle which they have done everything to try an repair. After many weeks (over 8 weeks and probably double of that of surgeries), they are faced with chosing a symes amputation or a bka. My little man has a bka, but a very long one. He cannot weight bear at all, and I see that as a very large advantage if he could. I do, though, understand that some symes amputees find prosthtic fits very difficult. Can you guys give me and my friends any advice? I will post it in the prosthetic section and maybe ted can answer from a CPO point of view. She is facing this amputation in the next few days (12/29-1/1 possibly). Thank you all!!!

Hi Mom2noble, I hope that somewhere you got some input - I know nothing about Symes amputations myself.
Best wishes for the New Year, Cynthia

Hi, I am a symes amputee and have been for over 30 years. Yes some of the state of the art ankles I can't have as my stump is too long BUT I can fully weight bear and 'walk' on my stump. For me this advantage greatly outweighs any limitations in the prosthetic components available. In the house I can (when necessary) walk around without a prosthetic on -so if I get up in the night I can just limp to the bathroom, when my children (now teenagers) were babies I could go get them and carry them downstairs for feeding without a leg on, if I go swimming in a public (hotel) pool I can take my leg off and walk to the water - t=for me all this makes life so much easier it is worth the slight limitations. When I am wearing a limb, I have one with an adjustable ankle so can wear heels from 1/2" to 2" to look smart and I have a second leg which is designed to be worn with no shoes or flat trainers for sport - six years ago I took up Tae Kwon Do (Korean Karate) with my daughter and I am now second degree black belt and instructor. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Hello Sue.
Welcome, and glad to hear you're doing so well.
I've PMed another member, gerberadaisy (Penny) who was only asking about Symes the other day, and you are now our Resident Expert (most of us have got ordinary bkas, akas, etc), so if you might get an email from her direct.
Cheers.
