Not the Microsoft version, but Holes in Sockets.
The point of my tibia has been banging away on the front of my socket for ages, and whatever we've tried, it still hurts. So the other day I made my prosthetist expand the titchy window he'd cut in the socket into a Picture Window. Apparently doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the structural stability of the socket, and it works - tib pain going, going, nearly gone.
Proof of the pudding, if it were needed: the INNER (softer) socket has now bulged out, just a few mill, into the hole, as if we'd heated and blown it out (which we haven't), so the tibia has done it on its own - pushed its away out just that small distance which has made the difference.
I'll post pics if you like!

That's really good news Allen! I'm glad that something seems to be working :-)

Allen:
Maybe you should refer your modified socket as Ubuntu (a free Linux distribution) instead of making reference to Micro$oft Windows.

Bill, in my case it would be an OSX, but point taken; wouldn't want to upset Mr Gates or his men.

, Oh pity your poor soul (LOL)!
, His product WAS good, now just a rip-off. I hate being treated like a crook using his product. I am slowly learning and switching to Linux. If you undertake such a mission, consider Ubuntu, it is the Micro$oft Windows of the Linux world, errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I guess OSX is Linux based, but not free! I have not had as much success with other Linux distributions as with Ubuntu. Word of warning, I would not try any Linux distribution on a older computer, and especially if any of the periphals are older. You simply cannot get good functional drivers for many of the older boxes. Thats becoming a fact with newer periphals and old Windows operating systems as well, old meaning WinXP.
Goodness, I sure went off the deep end here, this post started out as chopping a window in a socket - sorry Allen.

No trouble, Bill, none at all. Although I suspect that Linux might have been based on Mac OS originally, no? But I'm no expert on the history of personal computers!

If you want to avoid windows, the Germanic approach is considered proper. The opening is a fenestration. What you are wearing is a fenestrated socket.

Allen:
Linux was derived from the Unix operating system developed by the defunct AT&T Labs.
Mac OS derived from the Xerox Labs work on graphical interfaces which Steve Jobs recognized the future market value of before Xerox did.
Micro$oft Windows derived from work Gates was doing for IBM (OS2) to replace DOS.

Defenestration is the act of throwing someone or something out of a window.
I got curious about the word fenestration and found the above- I though it was funny :-)

Barclay:
Shall we assume that when Allen gets fed up with his socket with a "fenestration" in it he will toss it out the window?

Funnily enough, Newton's 3rd Law came into play (don't it always?), that is, To Every Action there is an Equal and Opposite Reaction.
The big hole was fine for a week, then gradually my stump pushed its way down and forward - only by a few millimetres, but enough to unbalance the rest of it in the socket. A strategically-placed rubber pad helped, and it's okay at the moment, but my prosthetist is working on a new sort of suction socket instead, as he reckons in the long term I'd be better off with it.
Oh well, back to the drawing-board.

Allen:
Much like Ted teaching us of the meaning and correct use of the term fenestration, you have introduced Newton's 3rd Law. Could you assist in advising a layman what this really means --
"Third law: The mutual forces of action and reaction between two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear. This means that whenever a first body exerts a force F on a second body, the second body exerts a force −F on the first body. F and −F are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. This law is sometimes referred to as the action-reaction law, with F called the "action" and −F the "reaction". The action and the reaction are simultaneous."
Remember, a simple mind requires a simple answer.

Bill: I'm no Ted (in terms of engineering expertise)!
All I'll venture is that if Newton had been a BKA, he might have said that "If You Cut a Big Hole in Your Socket, Your Stump might Slide Down".

It sure is noce when a leg caused no pain when walking. Golad to hear its working out for you Allen. It sure is. After several months of being thoroughly uncomfortable, mine have felt better this week, not sure why, though I am making 'windows' in socks ... completely unscientific ..... but sometimes works

Hello Stinker, good to hear from you again.
Well, my last post was in February, when it was working. Now it isn't! (Never mind, no-one said life would be fair, did they?)
Holes in socks might well help, as those small adjustments can make large differences. I keep my fingers crossed for you, Ann.
