Been busy running back-and-forth to the hospital this weekend with an IV hanging out of my arm getting doses of antibiotics.
On Friday morning, my leg started feeling 'funny' in a sore-kinda way. I'd slipped and fell on the ice several times this week with each fall being a source of a potential sore spot on the stump as it gets knocked around in the socket as I try - normally unsuccessfully - my own version of acrobatics to try to stay upright, and not with my a$$ in the snow...
By 0900, my leg was feeling sore and the prosthesis was feeling tight. I went to a private area in the office, shed the leg, and had a look, it was red and swelling. I took off a 3-ply and put it back on. Seemed to fit better and feel better. By noon, it was feeling tight again, and walking was painful. I could only really walk with the use of the collapsible cane I keep in my desk drawer. I took off the last of my socks and went with liner-only. By 1:00 - i was in a considerable amount of pain, and yet - freezing! I was shivering. It felt as though the office was without any sort of heating system at all. Considering that, and the pain - I told the boss I was going home.
Once home, I had a hot bath, soaked for 2 hours or so, until the water got too cold after warming it up three times... Then off to bed to wrap up in our thickest duvet quilt. When my wife got home, I was still freezing and shivering, however had managed to sleep. There was no hope of getting my prosthesis on at this point. She took my temp, and it read 100.3F.
I called the Health Link (phone-a-nurse) number and asked their advice. She told me to get to the hospital immediately, certainly within four hours.
So I went. Was immediately admitted into the ER, immediately put on a cocktail of Gravol, Morphine and Tylenol, and two rounds of Antibiotics. Blood was drawn, and I was there to wait until the fever broke. And it did... They tell me it's cellulitis. I've had that before - twice, but it didn't present this painfully, or this fast. I was let go at 4:00 AM on saturday morning if I promised to return every few hours for more antibiotics until it was appropriate to stop. Since yesterday morning, I've been back six times now. At least three more rounds of it tomorrow. Maybe after those three tomorrow, I can go on oral antibiotics.
Anyone have a similar experience?
