Sled Hockey is a disabled sport and to be honest amputees are the best players in the world at it. It is primarily a sport for spinal cord injuries and/or defect, amputees or any form of congenial defect affecting mobility. As well abled bodied individuals are allowed to play(otherwise it may be considered discrimination, as if) Sled hockey is an exciting alternative sport that uses the rules of hockey. However, instead of skating, the players sit on a specially designed sled and use two shortened sticks with ice picks on the butt end to propel themselves across the ice. Standard hockey rules apply. Legal body contact and raised puck shooting are as much a part of sled hockey as they are in traditional hockey equipment. Equipment for the sport consists of a tubular framed sledge, about 1.5 meters (3-5 feet) long and approximately 7 cm (3 inches off the ice, with two hockey skate blades mounted beneath the seat. A portion of the front frame rests on the ice and provides lateral stability. Straps around the ankles, knees, and waist securely hold the player on the sledge. Two half meter (1.5 foot) "sticks" are used. The "sticks" are modified hockey sticks with 4 cm teeth attached to the bottom of the non-blade end. Leaning left or right while digging the stick into the ice, turns the sled. Players slide to a stop on one or both blades like a stand up skater. All players wear regulation protective hockey equipment.

There's a push to include standing amputee hockey in the Sochi 2014 Paralympics: www.iihf.com/home-of-hockey/news/news-singleview/article/standing-amputee-hockey-in-2014.htmlI don't know how it will turn out, as the Paralympics seem to be trying to eliminate standing amps from the games (the new track rules to limit participation by standing amps didn't go over well at all, but we're stuck with them). IMHO, this has been driven by the takeover a few years ago of ISOD, the international amputee sports federation by Stoke-Mandeville, the international wheelchair sports federation, which is promoting its traditional base of wheelchair athletes at the expense of amps.
