hi, my name is Dewan, I am a South African teenager (16)
I had my right foot amputated on 2013-05-31 by choice. I was born with a tumour in my spinal cord that caused me a lot of issues in my lower body, and I grew tired of fighting a uphill battle to save my foot.
so I had it amputated and I cant say that I have ever looked back. sure wearing a prosthesis is no cake walk, but hey, I can run now. I missed a lot of my life, and I have 15 years of catching up to do. I do not limit myself to a disability.. I am currently training to become a Mixed Martial Artist.. and I am going skydiving sometime next year..
do you have any ideas or activities? if so post them.

Hi, Dewan, and welcome to our little amp-family. This may not sound the way I intend it, but you're actually pretty lucky that you were able to make your decision to amputate when you were still young. It meant that you will be able to make all your necessary "adjustments" to living with a prosthesis while you're still filled with all that youthful energy to keep you going. By the time you have to worry about going "over the hill," the prosthesis will be just a normal part of your life.
I admire your attitude...it's really the only way to look at getting on with life after going through such a major change, and it will keep you going through all the various adjustments, fittings, etc. I'm real curious about how Mixed Martial Arts training will go for you...I know plenty of amps who run, bike, skydive and SCUBA dive, surf, hike, and do assorted single marital arts...but it sounds like you're aiming for something pretty darned challenging! Keep us posted on that!
You're probably going to come up with a variety of questions as you get more and more involved with life-with-prosthesis...while most of us are on the "older" side, many of us have been dealing with amp-dom for many years, and we're always willing to jump in with advice!
