Everyone has been busy over the holidays (whatever holidays you observe...) but I just wanted to start a "Check-in" thread to see what's been going on with my 'some assembly required' friends out there.
The job has been very challenging and busy lately. For those of you who don't know, I'm a project manager as part of a team who handles renovations and major capital construction projects for a major polytechnic post secondary institute in western Canada. We are the busiest we've ever been in the history of the institute with major developments that have started that will likely span over the next 20-30 years. So - that's pretty much locked me up for the foreseeable future with some pretty intense and potentially exciting times!
Personally - as my other thread has indicated - just turned 39 and passed the "half way point" where over half my life has now been spent as an amputee. I still don't know if that's significant or not for me... I thought it was going to be a big deal in my mind but it turns out it kind of isn't! Imagine that...
While I turned 39, my wife turned 40 thirteen days prior. Her birthday present was s surprise trip to New York City for a week. I had to reveal that she was going on a trip as since having our little girl four year ago, we haven't been doing any travelling and our passports had expired. So I had to tell her that we're going somewhere to prod her to get a new passport. She didn't know the destination until we checked in at the airport. I've done this before, and paid dearly for it, since she never knows how to pack for the destination if it's unknown. I recognized this and thought she'd have no problems finding places to shop in New York. Her sister, brother-in-law and cousin were along with us, and we had a blast. But oh man... the amount of walking... I ended up having to take it easy when we got back just in time for Christmas to give my stump a well-deserved break. Flying on the 2nd busiest weekend in the United States - well... that was an experience. But we made it back in time to fetch our daughter from my parent's place and have Christmas at home. But one of the highlights of the trip: New York Cheesecake in Rockerfeller Center! Oh. My. God. And we had lunch twice in Canegie Deli - amazing place.
Then - well... then both my wife and I developed the flu! So yay! The little girl got through the whole experience unscathed. We had my mother-in-law staying with us and she served as the girl-deflector-shield while my wife and I recovered.
New Years is not usually something we make a big deal about... We put the girl to bed and watched the first 'Hobbit' movie on the PVR and then went to bed.
Back to work on the 2nd. Took two days to get through the emails I'd been ignoring on the break...
And here I am... back at work hoping winter goes away now because I am so sick of shovelling snow. We have about 30" standing on the lawn here and the snowbanks along my driveway are at least 5'.
Winter in Canada...
Happy New Year! What's new with everyone? Spill it!
