Having been an amputee for more than 40 years I'm accustomed to the occasional stares. As a rule, I pretend not to notice so as not to embarrass the other party. Hey, it's only human for the out-of-ordinary to catch one's eye, so I don't mind. But today I got on an elevator with a middle-aged gentleman... we were the only two in the car... and I could tell out of the corner of my eye that he was giving me the once-over; however it lasted longer than the customary few seconds. Plus he wasn't even trying to be discreet--his head was turned to face me. When it got to the point of discomfort I turned to look at him with an inquisitive expression. I was expecting him to say something like, "my cousin lost his arm in a car accident" (or some other apologetic explanation), but instead he said, "you're very pretty." I thought I'd heard them all before, but this line caught me completely by surprise. Thanks, kind stranger!

ooh Helen, I think he liked you. Over here that might be considered a 'chat up line'. (ha ha) What was he like? did you get a number?

Thanks, ladies. I said "thank you," and when the elevator reached the ground floor I exited first and didn't look back. It was only a 3-floor ride, so the entire episode took place within 30 seconds or so. Maybe I missed an opportunity , or maybe I just needed a little pick-me-up that day . Helen
