My ATK amputation of right leg was 4 weeks ago today. The crutches I got in the hospital are not the most comfortable, and the hand grips have lost all their cushioning. I used a cane for 5 years that had an ergonomic grip that I really liked. I found Mobilegs crutches on the internet that have the same style grips. I ordered a pair to try, I figure they can't be any worse, but hopefully better. I may be on them forever, don't know about getting a prosthesis. With a fused hip, my prosethetist said a c-leg would be my only choice for a leg. Don't know if insurance will cover it, if not can't afford on my own. It won't be the end of the world if I don't. Even on crutches, I get around better and easier than before, among other problems I had was my knee was also fused.

By and large, the "gear" that hospitals provide tends to be aimed at the "lowest common denominator." There is an amazing variety of mobility aids out there, so do check out some of the options...life is easier when your gear fits your body and lifestyle! If there's a well-equipped medical supply store near you, you might even want to visit them and "test drive" a number of different styles of crutches. I know that the walker I finally wound up purchasing on my own is a tremendous improvement on the one the hospital gave me!
And (I know you're probably tired of hearing me say this) don't automatically give up on a prosthesis. If your prosthetist says a C-leg is your "only option," see if you can do some negotiating/mediating to get your doctor to prescribe the C-leg as "medically necessary." That simple phrase can sometimes work wonders with insurance.

I got a set of the Mobilegs, and really like them. They have large ergonomic hand grips that have some "give" to them and angled out just a bit. Now my other crutches seem almost too uncomfortable to use.

A disclaimer- I am not connected with Mobilegs in any way, nor am I promoting them.
