Life can be over whelming sometimes, people get sick, people get into car accidents, people go through financial troubles, it’s all a part of growing up. These things usually happen with gaps in between them, Someone gets sick and a couple months (or years) go by with out any incident. That time can be crucial in order to collect ones’ self and re-evaluate what is important in their lives. Let me tell you a story of the past month in the Moore household.
As many of you know, my mother Sherri Moore has always been relatively sick. Growing up, i can remember numerous times when my mom was in the ICU and the doctor telling me “This really isn’t looking good, I’ll give your mother about a ten percent chance of surviving this.” As always, she pulled through. I don’t give my mom enough credit, she is a tough son of a bitch, but i digress. My mom’s list of medical disabilities is a pretty long one, of which i won’t dive too much into, just the basics.
First and foremost, my mother was in the U.S Army for about ten years as a captain, working in the E.R as an R.N. It was there my mom first ran into trouble, lifting a patient off their bed breaking her back. Fast forward to now and she has broken every bone in her back, and probably most of the bones in her entire body. She has debilitating rheumatoid arthritis to the extent that she no longer has use of her hands. She is also a diabetic, has ARDS ( Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome) , Honestly theres too much. Sorry.
One or two years ago a wound had formed on my moms shin. The wound ended up growing and deepening to the point that her ligament was visible. Terrible, right? It was. She also had wounds on her other leg too. On account of her diabetes and other factors, the wound would not heal. That actually isnt that rare for seniors with diabetes (and who smoked). We had a wound care nurse coming two to three times a week to clean it. It wasn’t better, but at least it wasnt worse. Then something very bad happened.
One thing you should know about my mom is cause of all the meds my mom is on, and how bad her arthritis is, Her bones are weak. When i was young, i accidentally broke my moms hand from closing a door on her. Her bones are almost paper thin. So the night she fell down was one of the literal worst moments in my entire life. It was my worst fear actualized, when i saw her fall i knew our families life had changed forever.
`That fall ended up breaking her pelvis, and she was now bed ridden. With my moms’ already poor circulation, that break slowed blood flow to the wound to the point that the wound get exponentially worse, to the point where the wound went necrotic. Her wound died. The doctors had no other choice than to do an amputation on her left leg, above the knee. Post-op we took her to an intense rehab clinic, where we expected her to be for a while while she recuperated.
The terrible thing is my mom can’t use her hands. She cant use crutches, cant use a walker, so her situation became very unique and incredibly hard. It ended up being too much for the rehab center, and we had to move her into a long term care facility.
During this time, my father, Robert Moore, had to be admitted to the hospital for falling ill. He had to be moved into the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit because of his unstable heart pressure. Luckily he was released after four days, but dont take that as he was better. To this day my father is still sick, My sister and I taking care of him as best we can, having been brought to the hospital 3 times in the past two weeks.
The day after my mom was moved into the new center, the unimaginable happened. After picking my sister up from work, we were driving home to change. It was then someone ran a red light and smashed into our family car that we all shared. He was going 65 mph, we were going 35. It was as if a wall smashed into the side of our car going 90 mph. It was a terrible car accident, sending all three of us to the hospital, my dad had a chest wall contusion and concussion, my sister had a concussion and a knee injury, and I ‘luckily’ walked away with only whiplash and a minor concussion. Can you believe that? All in a 2 week span.
I would not be reaching out for help unless it was absolutely critical. My families financial situation has been pretty messed up before all of this happened, and now we’re standing on the edge of a deep canyon of which I cant see the bottom, and I can feel fire licking at the soles of my shoes.
Now we are starting to get the medical bills in, and it is looking VERY bad. I am with out health insurance, and my moms medicare is only willing to pay for my mothers rehab for a week or two and then thats it. On top of that we have the bills for that car and the possibility of having to get a lawyer. My parents are both 100 percent disabled and are on a fixed income. I would get a job to help pay, but my mom needs me home to take care of her.
It is at the point were we have no food, no gas, nothing. Every cent my parents have is gone before they even recieve it. We need help. Urgently. We have a week until the rental car is taken away, and then we are screwed. Anything helps, and every cent would be so greatly appreciated, you have no idea. The Moore family has been through so much in our short time on this planet. Thanks so much for reading, and thank you again for any help.
