Hi,
My first post here. I was hoping for some help/advice with my amputation scar pain.
I am 44 years old. I had my below knee amputation surgery on my left leg May of last year. A month later, I actually fell out of my wheelchair and landed right on my stump, reopening the incision. I had another surgery, and then a lot of other setbacks to my prosthetic. I have been on a prosthetic for several months now. I can walk great, but my scar from the repair surgery is hurting really bad, still after all this time. There's scar tissue, and I've been trying to break it up for months, but it's still really painful to walk. It's not the stump that hurts, it's the damn incision area. Any idea how long it will take to break up the scar tissue, so it won't kill me to walk on it? I have Type 1 Diabetes, Rhumatoid Arthritis and am overweight- surely these might be factors. I hope maybe someone has a similar story. Thanks! Annette

Hi there, welcome to the forums. Glad you came in and posted...
Is it across the entire scar or is it localized to one spot?

Hi Annette
Welcome to the forums. I am a below knee too, but can't say I have had any specific problems with the scar, apart from when the prosthetics have caused it problems a few times.
Can you tell us more about your leg, what does the scar look like, does it look red or inflamed? also what sort of prosthetic set up you have? Do you think you are putting weight on the end of your stump, could this be causing problems or did you have Ertl surgery.
One of the things that has upset my scar in the past has been the prosthetic socket being too tight further up and the end of the leg not making contact with the end, so the end swelled, could this be a possibility?

Hi Annette -
Some really good questions from Ann...the ones that I'd add is this: Does the incision area only when wearing the prosthesis or is it also present when your leg is off...is it a consistent level of pain or does it "come and go" or vary from day to day?
Your diabetes and other medical factors may well have some impact on what you're feeling, but my very first thought is that it could be socket fit, possibly bearing too much weight on the incision area.
