I am a 33 year old above elbow amputee on my right side. In the last year I have developed carpal tunnel in my left arm. I have tried physical therapy and cortisone injections and am at a point where surgery might be my last option. Wondering if there are any other amputees out there that have developed a similar problem and what they have done to fix it? How is the recovery after surgery? Things like that.

Hi, pimsnok2004. I'm a 40+-yr right-arm amputee with carpal tunnel in my left wrist. Fortunately, my condition has been deteriorating very slowly over many years--I been going in for a needle test about every 5 years for the last 20 years. Right now we're just monitoring my progress, keeping surgery in mind as a last resort. I've tried acupuncture with moderate success, but the thing that has worked best for me is simply cutting back on my computer usage, and OF COURSE wearing a wrist brace to sleep (when the pain gets bad I even wear the brace during the day). If you have to get the surgery, I would recommend getting the minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery--I've only seen the commercials on TV, but they boast a must quicker healing time than the traditional "open incision" surgery. Come to think of it, I haven't seen any of those commercials in a number of years... perhaps that's the only way they do it now. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Thanks for sharing Helen. I've worn a wrist brace every night for the past 2 years. I've noticed using my phone and IPad definitely add to the pain. I might give acupuncture a try. Thanks again.

I too am an AE and my remaining hand is feeling the pain of doing all the work. I am just coming up on 1 year after amputation. I haven't been able to get a prothesis yet, due to health set backs. I'm curious of those who are saying they are experiencing the carpal tunnel in their remaining hand do you use a prothesis?
