Participants Needed Amputee Pain Study University of Washington

Researchers in the departments of Orthopedics, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington are seeking study participants in a project investigating treatment for pain related to amputation.

Treatment interventions focusing on providing education about chronic pain and how to change how a person thinks about and copes with his/her pain have been used to treat chronic pain in the general population. The purpose of this study is to see if these treatments delivered over the telephone can benefit persons with an acquired amputation. Specifically, we want to determine if these treatments can help reduce the negative consequences that pain often causes in terms of a person's mood, daily activities, and enjoyment of life. We are also interested in finding out if these treatments decrease a person's pain. Subjects will participate in eight 60-minute treatment sessions performed over the telephone by one of the study´s clinicians. Subjects will also participate in telephone interviews before, during, and after treatment sessions.

Participation in the study will last approximately 13 months. Compensation for completion of the telephone interviews is provided. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years of age, have moderate to severe chronic pain, be able to communicate over the telephone, and be able to speak, read and understand English.

I'm new here and am curious how this turned out. (results) Does the data exist yet?

Don't hold your breath, these folks never report their findings except in very rare instances -- which is why I think these sorts of posting should not be permitted.

I suppose we let them through on the basis that there MIGHT be some benefit, some day, from such studies.

The only probes we ban are the overtly commercial.

But that's just the way we've done it so far - if there is a general mood not to allow such investigations, obviously we'll change the policy.

(I'm more intrigued by the fact that we've been GOING since 2009!)

I've participated in a couple of medical studies over the years...they did at least share their results with the participants.

Unfortunately, this particular study was NOT one I was a part of.........................

I don't mind seeing studies posted here. If it sparks some sort of enlightenment in the people that can actually help us deal with what we deal with - won't that help? The medical business is a big business these days. Although I'd like to hear what they found out by these studies, I can understand why they'd like to keep their cards close to their chests.

But that's just me...

I figure that publicizing the fact that someone is conducting a study is at least making folks aware of the subjects that are being looked at. Of course, that's also why I've agreed to participate in the studies I've been asked to take part in...anything that can advance the knowledge base in a particular field seems like a good thing to me.

While I'd be interested in seeing the study results, I don't think it's essential that the general public knows what's been determined...at least not until it looks like a useful result has been obtained.

So yeah...I'm in favor of our running notices of anything that could ultimately prove of interest to amputees.
