You hear about accidents all the time on the news and media, but you never think it's going to be you. On October 11th, 2012 my life completely changed in an instant.
I arrived at work on October 10th to find out we were being sent up north for some sales calls. A few hours of meetings and preparing later, we jump into the van excited to start our adventure. After many hours of driving at around 1am, I was completely exhausted and decided it was time to switch with my coworker and let her drive for awhile. I quickly fell asleep in the back seat. Only half an hour later I woke up with the seat belt digging into my side, as I've done so many times before I removed it to adjust. In that instance the van hit black ice, veering it across the road and into the guard rail. I remember rolling around in the van, until suddenly I was crashing through the window and onto the cold highway. Sitting up stunded and scared I looked at the wreckage around me, until a noise from within that I've never heard before came out. Pure terror flooded my body, unable to move and freezing cold I sat there sobbing and screaming.
Suddenly one of my coworkers was there at my side, trying to keep me warm and concious. He was gathering blankets and jackets from people who had stopped, meanwhile trying to get me to sing the Disney songs we had been singing a couple days before. I could hear sirens in the distance, and I began to pray and pray they got there quickly. It felt like I sat there for hours, until they got there. Then the flurry began, people running every which way. Next thing I knew I was in the ambulance fighting with the paramedics over my cell phone because I wanted so badly to talk to my dad. I don't remember much after that, just a couple clips from the hospital.
So many times before I've taken my seatbelt off to reach for something or adjust never thinking of what could happen. I never thought I'd be where I am today, never believed that life could change so quickly. In that 30 seconds I had to very serious breaks in my back that nearly paralyzed me, I lost my right foot and almost my left. That instance changed my life completely, it changed how I live everyday and my perspective on the world around me. I learned to appreciate everyday even the hard ones, I learned to love myself more then ever before. Most importantly I learned that life may throw you obsticals, but it's how you overcome them that shows you how strong you really are.
