Hi
I've got a chronic wound on my left hand I've my middle knuckle its been like that for about 9 months. I have limited movement in my hand. I've been on strong painkiller for a while. couple days ago I had a acciendent cutting food and split and went over my wound with a knife cutting through my tendon. I've got another infection in the wound and this is my 12th infection in 8 months. I'm in pain all the time and can't move fingures. my doc wants me and my wife to see him next week to discuss my options. I just can't keep going on like this. I've had 14 ops and its keeps getting infections.
do you think they will consider amputation ? will it be my whole hand or just middle knuckle and fingure. I just limited movement in fingures.
hope you can help

Hey, Jake. Sorry to hear about the suffering you've undergone this past year. Having no medical background, I can't offer an opinion about the extent of options your doctor will offer. But generally speaking, amputations tend to be less aggressive at first, only returning to take more of the limb in a later surgery if the first one didn't fix the problem. I would be shocked if your doctor recommended taking the entire hand if only one finger has the wound and recurring infections--even though your other fingers may have limited mobility, that's no reason for amputating them! No matter what your doctor recommends, it would probably be a good idea to get a second (or even third) opinion. Good luck and let us know what options your doctor offers you.
Helen
