Hey everyone, my name is Mia,
Was just sitting at home thinking to myself there must be an online place to meet other disabled people (too obvious at this day and age) and found this place!
So my story, kind of a long 1 so I'll make it short
So I don't know much about how I got sick, but I did, I had a really bad infection and things got complicated. I went into septic shock or something and things got serious. Both my legs where amputated above the knee. Not sure what happened but my right leg got amputated a little higher than the left one. That was when I was smaller.... Now the stumps are about 3 inches apart I guess.
Anyway I had some previous medical problems which weren't really serious but it affected my life a lot more after I got sick.
Throughout my life I have suffered from incontinence, I've been to many doctors and tried different treatments and even surgery but nothing helped out properly. I am fully bladder and bowel incontinent and it's been pretty rough dealing with it. A previous surgery I went through to deal with the bowel incontinence brought up a lot of complications and I had to forgo that treatment. Unfortunately catheters turned out to be really painful to use 24/7 so I was stuck to using protective underwear. Even through middle school and high school I went through wearing embarrassingly thick underwear to avoid worse embarrassment.
Now at 20 years, attending college my incontinence is at its worst and I have had to resort to really thick, heavy duty adult briefs. Most days I go through 3-4 changes including the night. Bowel accidents ate what requires immediate changes so I have to carry a bag around for changing.
Anyway this has complicated my disability a lot. Initially I was in a wheelchair until my first pair of prosthetic's which had mechanical knees and I'm still using the same type of knee.
Changing has been one of the most challenging things to do by myself but it's something I've become better at doing. I'm also in support groups for the incontinence since mine is a server case and really complicates so many aspects of my life I just can't express it fully. My mother has been my closest and best friend and had helped me through the hardest of times and I wouldn't be doing as well as I am of not for her
Anyway feel free to ask questions I'm open to any. God bless!
