Hi my name is Michelle. I am from Kentucky, USA. I have been an amputee now for a couple of years and would like a cosmesis however I have not found anyone yet to make it so I'm on here looking for support and ideas.

Hi, Michelle, and welcome! Just a question, because I'm sort of confused: Did your prosthetist refuse to make a cosmesis for your leg? Or is it an insurance coveragee sort of thing? I'm also an LBKA, and my first prosthetist INSISTED that I have a cosmesis...in fact, it was his main selling point! I kept trying to talk about more technical and practical matters, but he just kept saying my leg would "work well and look perfectly normal."
Anyway, I wound up with a good leg and a nicely shaped basic cosmesis, consisting of a cylinder of dense styrofoam covered with an opaque knee-high stocking. That seems to be a pretty common covering, and I wore it until I retired. Then I stripped off the styrofoam and had my prosthetist just start laminating designs onto my socket. I like that look better, and it's not as fragile as the styrofoam was.
Whatever the case, I firmly believe that any amputee should be entitled to basic coverage for a basic cosmesis. It's YOUR leg and should express YOUR feelings. I know that my own insurance covered both my old styrofoam covering and my current fabric laminations. Some of the sites Helen provided are truly beautiful, but they are expensive and are rarely covered by insurance...but if you're just looking for something to "decorate" your socket, check the first listing on that post: Fred's Legs sells some cute, reasonably priced covers, including some in skin tones.
First of all, though, if you haven't been able to get results from your prosthetist, either try really pushing them for a reason, or else find a new prosthetist.
Good luck in your quest...I hope you find the cosmesis you want!
