Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone on this site with an AKA (or other) has decided against using a prosthesis? I'm 64, sedentary, have osteoporosis, 2 TKAs And 2 THAs and with my husband retiring next year (he's 69, 70 in March) I won't have insurance besides Medicare (costs). On that note, we live approximately 80 miles from OKC, OK (we live in Holdenville, OK) we can't afford traveling to the City as many times as it takes for fittings, adjustments and whatever. Consequently, we have decided (I decided then got Fred on Board) I will not have a prosthetic. I have researched what our insurance plus Medicare (I'm disabled) will accept for reasons to obtain a Powered Wheelchair also what they'll pay towards one. With my surgeon's and rehabilitation physician's help I believe I'll be able to receive one and a lift. So, that's the route I'm going. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Well, gee, I wish I'd read this post first, Mary! If your house and community are wheelchair-friendly, you could do just fine, prosthesis-less. However, don't rule it out entirely...there has been tremendous progress in prosthetic legs in recent years and if funding becomes available you might be surprised at what's out there for you. At least try to make an effort to keep informed about developments in the industry...you never know what might turn up out there.
I do know a few AKAs who use just a wheelchair to get around...and even basic BKAs like me appreciate having a wheelchair around in the event of not being able to wear a prosthesis for a while (or even just being really tired after an unusually busy day). There is no one "right" way to live as an amputee...whatever works for you IS the right way. Don't feel you need to justify your decisions...it's YOUR life!
