New here and would like some advice on suction sockets

I was born a double AK amp a long time ago, and have been using prosthetics for over 53 years. Over the years obviously these have changed but for the majority of the time I've used a "suspension" system (apparently that's what they call it), so a waist belt and straps which connect from the belt to the legs. Recently I've been told that I might be able to get microprocessor knees but only if I swop to suction sockets. Now the problem - I've been wearing these suction sockets for two weeks, every day, starting off gradually and wearing them more each day. They feel soooo tight some days and I can't seem to get them to feel at all comfortable.  Most of the time they are not actually sore as such, but I really can't wait to take them off. I wear my non-suction sockets normally 12-14hrs a day with no problems. I am due to see the prosthetist next week, but just wondered whether anyone had a similar experience/any advice?

Hiya back, Jess......I made the switch from a pin-lock suspension to a suction socket...never had to wear a belt. However, I'll say that my suction socket DOES fit much more snugly than any of my old pin0locks did. For me, that wasn't a problem...I actually like the snugness, and have from the very first time I tried my first suction check socket on. I am, however, a BK, so I'm not sure how I'd feel about that much tightness up on my thigh.

After so many decades in looser sockets, I'd think it probably WOULD take a long time to adjust to a different fit. But you do say that the tightness is really bad on "some days"...so here's one weird question for you: are there some days where you eat more salt than others? I have a friend who has trouble with volume change on her stump the day after eating Chinese food...the salt makes her retain water, which equals a tight socket fit. Just a thought...if it doesn't fit for you, ignore it.

One possible suggestion: Can you increase your activity level while wearing the suction sockets? It might be enough to keep your muscles relaxed and any swelling at bay.

I'm glad you're going to be seeing your prosthetist soon...please let us know what they have to say!

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I am replying to Chreylm about her suction socket. I am an ATK and wear the liner with a seal ring around it inside the socket body. In answer to your question about bloating... you can certsinly feel the difference after having eaten something bloating you from the day before. However, routinely, a well- fitted socket allows for weight gains and losses until such extremes warrant a new socket. Bloating usually does not reach that extreme, at least for me, but once you are at the point where wearing the socket becomes almost unworkble due to weight gain or loss, it's time for a new socket. Medicare and other guidelines allow for weight changes of 10% or more, sometimes 20% in either direction, before approving a new socket as "medically necessary." I hope this helps.

I wanted to add to my last post that suction sockets are now coming out with adjustable pressure air bladders in them to allow for a good fit anytime.
